Netflix Animation 2022, The Seabeast : 3D Previs seq. “Swallowed Whole”
This thrill-ride of a sequence closes out the first act of the seabeast and features some of the film's most iconic moments. A technical challenge to be sure, the previs work showcased here mapped out every detail ranging from the angle of the spiraling ship, to the tension and cutting of the ropes, to the depth of the whirlpool. Artistically, the compositions, rough lighting, and shot design set the tone for moments of both high drama and quiet eeriness.
What is 3D Previs?
Previs is short for ‘pre-visualization’.
3D Previs is a presentation tool used widely in the entertainment industry to quickly "sketch out" a concept using 3D animation.
IN FEATURE ANIMATED FILMS, PREVIS CONVEYS TO DEPARTMENTS DOWNSTREAM A ROUGH MOVIE OF WHAT A SEQUENCE WILL LOOK LIKE IN ITS FINAL FORM. I work closely with the director, producer and editor to create dynamic action sequences, compose beautiful shots, and increasingly to brainstorm new story ideas altogether.
